Geneva Workshop on Incentivising the Grand Challenges (Fall 2016)

The Graduate Institute Geneva and EPF-Lausanne and the Sinergia Partners (IHEID, EPFL, ETH and LSE) will convene a two-day meeting to develop proposals for meeting these global challenges, especially in the context of climate change management. The meeting will occur on 10-11 November and consist of two distinct events.

On 10 th November, the Sinergia Partners will convene a small commission of experts in this field, to discuss and develop a brief proposal assessing and evaluating the basic approaches to addressing these problems: a) R&D taxes/subsidies; b) IPR, prizes and public contracting; c) Industry and new technology development. The meeting will result in a short report by the Commission evaluating the relative merits of these approaches, and making proposals regarding its recommendations for potential ways forward on these challenges.

On 11 th November, this Commission will call a public forum in Geneva to meet with the interested national and international organizations in Geneva – in order to present its proposals and to discuss its draft report. The forum will present in the context of discussion panels, and then invite comments and responses from the attending organizations. The final report will be the result of both workshop and public forum.

Overall, the Sinergia Partners hope to stimulate debate in this important area and initiate discussion of proposals based on careful and informed analysis.
